Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is making major strides in its commitment to renewable energy by launching a significant solar energy project at its Gaydon headquarters in the UK. The newly inaugurated solar farm spans an impressive 26 hectares and features an 18MW solar capacity, capable of supplying up to 31% of the site’s energy needs. This project marks the first of three major solar energy initiatives planned in the UK as part of JLR’s global renewable energy strategy.

Solar Farm Supports Sustainability and Biodiversity

Not only does the solar farm contribute to JLR’s energy needs, but it also integrates environmental sustainability by supporting biodiversity efforts. Native wildflowers have been planted between the solar panels, and hedgerows have been restored with bird- and pollinator-friendly species, enhancing the local ecosystem. These efforts align with JLR’s goal to exceed mandatory biodiversity targets, showcasing its commitment to sustainable operations beyond just energy generation.

Expanding Solar Capabilities at the Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre

In addition to the solar farm at Gaydon, JLR is expanding its use of renewable energy at its Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre (EPMC) in Wolverhampton. This autumn, the EPMC will complete the installation of an 18,000-panel rooftop solar array with a 10.7MW capacity, expected to generate 9,512 MWh of electricity annually. This capacity is expected to meet nearly 40% of the site’s energy demands, supporting the production of key components such as electric drive units and batteries for JLR’s future electric vehicles.

Solar Expansion in China and Upcoming Projects

JLR’s commitment to renewable energy extends globally. In China, JLR’s joint venture with Chery Automobile (CJLR) has already made impressive progress by adding a 20MW rooftop solar array. The new installation, operational since May 2025, now generates over half of the facility’s monthly energy consumption, contributing to energy cost savings, efficiency improvements, and better temperature regulation in the workshop.

Looking ahead, JLR has announced plans for another significant solar project at its Merseyside site, slated for 2026. The company will install over 10MW of solar carports, making it the largest solar carport installation in the UK. The project will include solar-powered walkways and EV charging stations, providing a sustainable, energy-efficient solution for employees and visitors alike.

JLR’s Renewable Energy Vision for 2030

JLR has set an ambitious goal to source at least one-third of its global energy from on-site or nearby renewable sources by 2030, reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and improving its energy security. This strategy will also help mitigate risks from energy price volatility and reduce JLR’s overall environmental impact.

The company has already made significant progress toward this target, achieving a 23.4% reduction in operational emissions compared to its FY19/20 baseline, primarily through energy efficiency improvements and the transition to renewable energy.

Electrification: Key to JLR’s Sustainability Strategy

JLR’s commitment to sustainable energy is an integral part of its Reimagine strategy, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality across the entire supply chain, including products and operations, by 2039. As part of this, JLR is accelerating its electrification efforts, with plans to offer fully electric models across both the Jaguar and Land Rover brands by the end of the decade. Jaguar, in particular, will become an entirely electric vehicle (EV) brand.

“We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint while creating long-term value, and our renewable energy projects are an important part of this goal,” said Andrea Debbane, Chief Sustainability Officer at JLR. “By generating renewable energy at our own sites, we gain greater control over our energy mix, reducing our dependence on unpredictable energy markets.”

Supporting the UK’s Clean Energy Future

JLR’s sustainability initiatives also support the UK’s broader industrial strategy, which focuses on growing the clean energy sector, attracting investment, and creating jobs. Sarah Jones, UK Industry Minister, commended JLR’s efforts, saying, “The UK is a world leader in renewables, and it’s great to see companies like JLR driving progress toward a clean energy future.”

As JLR continues its electrification journey and expands its renewable energy capabilities, the company is poised to be a leader in the global shift toward sustainable manufacturing and clean energy.
