In a major stride toward sustainable energy collaboration, India and Japan have agreed to elevate their partnership in the clean energy domain, with renewed emphasis on Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), biofuels, and green chemicals. The commitment was sealed during a high-level India-Japan Energy Dialogue, conducted via video link and co-chaired by India’s Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, alongside Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Muto Yoji.
Building on the framework of the Japan-India Clean Energy Partnership (CEP)—which institutionalized collaboration through sectoral Joint Working Groups (JWGs)—both countries reaffirmed their alignment on clean energy transition, energy security, and climate resilience.
From Present Progress to Future Pathways
Representatives from India’s Ministries of Power, New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), and Coal presented updates on achievements within the JWGs. The dialogue reviewed advancements in renewable integration, energy efficiency, clean hydrogen, and ammonia—while mapping out next steps
Broader Horizons: CCUS, Green Chemicals, and Biofuels
Stepping into new frontiers, both nations pledged to intensify cooperation in:
-
Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS) to mitigate industrial emissions and support carbon lifecycle management.
-
Green chemicals and biofuels, fostering sustainable industrial development and reducing reliance on fossil-based intermediates.
-
Advanced energy technologies including smart grids, energy storage, and renewable energy integration systems
This expansion marks a strategic deepening of bilateral energy collaboration beyond traditional clean energy domains, embracing full-spectrum sustainability.
Shared Goals: Energy Security and Inclusive Growth
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to energy security, inclusive economic development, and Asia–Pacific regional resilience. They emphasized that future energy systems must be affordable, equitable, and capable of backing robust growth across geographies
Strategic Impact for the Indo-Pacific Region
The dialogue underscored that India–Japan energy cooperation serves as a catalyst for broader regional sustainability and energy resilience. Positioned as leaders, both nations aim to provide a model for clean energy collaboration in the Indo-Pacific and beyond
