Coromandel International Limited, one of India’s leading agri-solutions providers, has signed an agreement with Veolia Water Technologies and Solutions (India) Pvt. Ltd. to enhance its seawater desalination capacity from 6 million litres per day (MLD) to 9 MLD at its Vizag facility.
The company had commissioned its initial 6 MLD desalination plant in 2023 as part of its sustainability roadmap to reduce dependence on surface water and ensure long-term operational resilience. The additional capacity will further bolster Coromandel’s efforts in adopting innovative and resource-efficient water management solutions.
The agreement was formalized by S. Sankarasubramanian, Managing Director & CEO, Coromandel International Ltd., and Gopal Madabhushi, Senior Vice President – Business Unit Leader (India & South Asia), Veolia, in the presence of Coromandel’s senior leadership team.
Build-Own-Operate Model for Long-Term Sustainability
The partnership will operate under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, with Coromandel providing infrastructure support and Veolia leveraging its global expertise in water treatment technologies, operations, and maintenance. Veolia will continue to operate the expanded facility, ensuring efficiency and sustainable performance.
Once commissioned, the expanded desalination plant is expected to meet 60% to 70% of Coromandel’s total water requirements at the Vizag site, significantly reducing reliance on external water sources and enhancing water resilience.
Leadership Speaks on the Initiative
Commenting on the development, S. Sankarasubramanian, MD & CEO, Coromandel International, said:
“Coromandel and Veolia’s partnership reflects a shared vision of sustainable transformation in industrial ecosystems. This initiative further strengthens Coromandel’s leadership in responsible manufacturing and reaffirms our commitment to environmental stewardship and efficient resource management.”
Strengthening Environmental Vision
The expansion aligns with Coromandel’s broader environmental vision of combining business growth with sustainable infrastructure. By enhancing its water self-reliance, Coromandel is not only safeguarding operations against future water scarcity but also setting a new benchmark for sustainability in the agri-inputs and manufacturing sectors in India.
