Himachal Pradesh, April 11, 2025 — In a major push towards sustainable transportation, the Himachal Pradesh government has approved the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 402 locations across the state. The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance green mobility and support the growing adoption of electric vehicles.
Government Premises to Host EV Charging Points
As part of the plan, EV charging infrastructure will be developed on key government premises including:
-
252 stations in PWD Rest Houses
-
19 stations at Jal Shakti Rest Houses
-
18 stations at Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEBL) premises
-
100 stations at Forest Department rest houses
-
12 charging points in Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP) office complexes
-
1 station at the Baddi Barotiwala Nalagarh Development Authority (BBNDA) office
Six Green Corridors Already Notified
The state has also notified six highways as green corridors, ensuring that electric vehicles can travel smoothly across regions. These corridors will be supported by charging stations located at petrol pumps, HPTDC hotels, government properties, and private hospitality establishments.
EV Growth and Government Support
According to Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the initiative is aimed at creating a robust and seamless EV charging network to promote the adoption of clean energy transportation in both public and private sectors.
Currently, 4,997 electric vehicles are registered in the state. Under the e-taxi scheme, 500 electric taxis are being deployed in various government departments, further promoting the shift towards sustainable travel.
Expanding Charging Infrastructure
To meet increasing demand, the government has already made significant progress:
-
23 EV charging stations are operational at existing petrol pumps
-
90 additional petrol pumps will receive charging infrastructure by the end of 2025
-
46 government sites have been earmarked for setting up charging stations with way-side amenities
-
In partnership with Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL), HPTDC will install charging points at 65 hotels, with 11 sites selected for the first phase
-
44 EV charging stations have been installed in private hotels across Himachal Pradesh
A Vision for a Sustainable Future
Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized the role of electric mobility in shaping a sustainable and eco-friendly future for the state. “We are committed to making Himachal Pradesh a leading hub for electric vehicles by building accessible and efficient infrastructure. This move will not only promote environmental conservation but also encourage the use of clean energy in transportation,” he said.
With consistent government backing, smart infrastructure development, and public-private partnerships, Himachal Pradesh is on track to become a model state for electric mobility in India.
