In a landmark move for India’s clean energy transition, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has unveiled plans to invest approximately ₹80,000 crore in large-scale solar and wind energy projects across Telangana, reinforcing the state’s position as a rising hub for renewable energy development.
Strategic Meeting with Telangana Leadership
NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh, along with senior officials, met with Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy at his residence in Jubilee Hills. Also present was Principal Secretary for Energy Navin Mittal.
During the discussions, NTPC highlighted Telangana’s significant renewable energy potential, with a particular focus on floating solar projects that could deliver an estimated 6,700 MW capacity.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy welcomed the proposal, assuring full government support.
“Telangana is committed to fostering a favourable environment for clean energy projects. The state will ensure fast-track clearances and infrastructure support to accelerate NTPC’s investment plans,” he stated.
Boost to Telangana’s Renewable Energy Targets
This investment aligns seamlessly with Telangana’s newly announced Renewable Energy Policy, which aims to add 20,000 MW of renewable energy and storage capacity by 2030. The state’s long-term vision includes building a 30.5 GW renewable ecosystem by 2030 and surpassing 47 GW by FY 2035 through solar, wind, energy storage, and distributed generation.
As part of its green mobility mission, Telangana plans to deploy 6,000 EV charging stations by FY 2030, doubling the network to 12,000 stations by FY 2035.
Current Renewable Energy Landscape
As of July 31, 2025, Telangana’s installed solar capacity exceeds 5 GW, with ground-mounted solar plants contributing 4,360 MW—about 87% of the total.
The state is also prioritising rooftop solar adoption. Recently, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu directed the installation of solar power systems across all government buildings, including schools and universities, to accelerate the clean energy transition.
Significance for India’s Green Energy Push
NTPC’s investment marks a pivotal step toward India’s national renewable energy targets and supports Telangana’s ambition to emerge as a leader in solar innovation, floating solar projects, and wind energy infrastructure. By leveraging policy support, advanced technology, and strategic partnerships, the state is poised to attract more large-scale green energy investments in the coming years.
