June 2026, ESG World News – Kirloskar Pneumatic Company Ltd (KPCL), one of India’s most respected engineering conglomerates, has unveiled Tonalli — a compact, decentralised waste-to-energy system that converts organic food waste into biogas and organic fertiliser. The launch signals a significant expansion of KPCL’s sustainability portfolio, bringing circular-economy thinking to industries, hospitality venues, industrial canteens, commercial kitchens, and residential communities.
A Circular Economy in a Compact Unit
Tonalli is built around a 100 per cent waste-utilisation principle. Rather than sending organic waste to landfill, the system uses an advanced Controlled Anaerobic Digestion Process to break down food waste and produce two outputs: biogas for cooking fuel and organic fertiliser for agricultural use. The result is a closed loop that recovers both energy and nutrients from material that would otherwise be discarded.
The system is designed to reduce dependence on conventional fuels such as LPG and PNG, offering users lower energy costs and a safer, cleaner alternative for daily cooking operations. Its decentralised architecture means it can be installed on-site, eliminating the logistics and cost of transporting waste off premises.
Engineering Reliability at Its Core
KPCL has equipped Tonalli with several layers of engineering innovation. Gas Agitation Technology replaces conventional mechanical agitators, improving system reliability and reducing maintenance requirements. Multi-stage biogas cleaning ensures consistent gas quality, while a Kirloskar compressor delivers pressurised gas for a stable cooking flame. PLC-based safety logic rounds out the package, providing industrial-grade protection through automatic flaring and pressure relief mechanisms.
Compliance With India’s New Waste Rules
The launch is timely. Tonalli aligns directly with India’s Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, which mandate decentralised processing and a four-stream waste segregation approach. For industries and commercial establishments navigating new compliance obligations, Tonalli offers a ready-made, regulation-friendly solution that converts a liability into a resource.
Leadership Voices
Aman Kirloskar, Managing Director of Kirloskar Pneumatic Company Ltd, framed the launch as part of the company’s broader engineering mission. “Tonalli represents our commitment towards engineering innovation that creates sustainable impact. As industries and communities increasingly look for smarter and decentralised waste-management systems, Tonalli offers an efficient way to convert food waste into valuable green energy while supporting compliance, resource recovery and long-term environmental responsibility,” he said.
Nuriel Pezarkar, Technology Partner from NobleExchange Environment Solutions Private Ltd, highlighted the product’s measurable environmental credentials. “Tonalli with BioBit Technology is more than a machine. It is a compact, plug-and-play solution where every installation is equivalent to thousands of trees planted, LPG replaced and carbon credits earned — measurable outcomes that reflect environmental responsibility, circularity and economic value,” he noted.
