In a significant step towards strengthening India’s circular economy and critical minerals ecosystem, N.A.N. GreenMet and Silox Specialities India have announced the formation of a 50:50 joint venture, NAN Silox GreenMet Private Limited, to establish a lithium-ion battery recycling and critical minerals recovery platform in Andhra Pradesh.
The venture aims to address the rapidly growing volume of end-of-life batteries generated by electric vehicles (EVs), consumer electronics, and energy storage systems while creating a sustainable domestic supply of valuable battery materials.
Supporting India’s Growing Battery Recycling Market
As India’s electric mobility and clean energy sectors continue to expand, the need for responsible battery disposal and resource recovery has become increasingly important.
Lithium-ion batteries contain critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese, which are essential for manufacturing new batteries. Recovering these materials from used batteries can help reduce dependence on imports, improve resource security, and support India’s long-term energy transition goals.
The newly formed joint venture plans to create an integrated battery recycling platform capable of processing spent batteries and recovering strategic materials for reuse in the battery manufacturing value chain.
Large-Scale Recycling and Mineral Recovery Facility
The Andhra Pradesh facility will be developed in two phases and will incorporate advanced recycling technologies, including:
- Battery shredding and material separation
- Beneficiation processes
- Hydrometallurgical refining
- Critical mineral recovery systems
Once fully operational, the project is expected to achieve a total processing capacity of:
🔋 40,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of battery shredding
🔋 20,000 TPA of hydrometallurgical processing
The facility will focus on recovering high-value battery materials, including:
- Lithium
- Cobalt
- Nickel
- Manganese
These recovered materials can then be reintroduced into the battery supply chain, reducing waste and supporting sustainable manufacturing practices.
Creating a Circular Battery Ecosystem
Beyond recycling, the joint venture plans to explore downstream opportunities that can add further value to recovered materials.
Potential focus areas include:
⚡ Production of cathode active materials (CAM)
⚡ Development of precursor cathode active materials (PCAM)
⚡ Second-life battery applications
⚡ Stationary energy storage solutions
⚡ Grid-scale energy storage systems
By moving beyond raw material recovery and into advanced battery materials, the venture aims to strengthen India’s domestic battery manufacturing ecosystem and support the country’s ambitions to become a global hub for clean energy technologies.
Strengthening Critical Mineral Security
The project comes at a time when governments and industries worldwide are prioritizing access to critical minerals required for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and battery storage technologies.
Global demand for lithium, cobalt, nickel, and other battery materials is expected to rise sharply over the coming decade as electrification accelerates across transportation and energy sectors.
Battery recycling is increasingly being viewed as a strategic solution to:
- Reduce dependence on imported raw materials
- Improve supply chain resilience
- Lower environmental impact
- Support resource efficiency
- Advance circular economy goals
Supporting India’s Energy Transition
India’s push toward electric mobility, renewable energy deployment, and battery energy storage systems is creating a parallel need for robust recycling infrastructure.
As millions of batteries eventually reach the end of their operational life, recycling facilities will play a critical role in recovering valuable resources while reducing environmental risks associated with battery disposal.
The N.A.N. GreenMet-Silox Specialities joint venture represents a major investment in India’s emerging battery recycling sector and aligns with broader national goals around sustainability, resource security, and clean energy development.
With large-scale processing capabilities and plans to enter advanced battery materials manufacturing, the venture is expected to contribute significantly to the development of a circular and self-reliant battery ecosystem in India.
