Every day, millions of Indians order food, groceries, and products delivered in paper cups, takeaway boxes, and cardboard packaging. Most consumers assume these products are environmentally friendly simply because they are made of paper.

The reality is often very different.

Many paper cups and food containers contain hidden plastic linings, chemical coatings, and synthetic adhesives that make recycling difficult and prevent them from breaking down naturally. As India’s food delivery and quick-commerce sectors continue to expand, the challenge of sustainable packaging has become increasingly urgent.

For three entrepreneurs from Pune, this problem became an opportunity.

In 2021, they launched their green packaging venture from a modest 100-square-foot laboratory with a simple mission: create packaging solutions that are genuinely plastic-free, environmentally responsible, and commercially viable.

Today, that small experiment has evolved into a fast-growing business that crossed ₹2 crore in revenue during FY26.

The Problem Hidden Inside “Eco-Friendly” Packaging

India’s packaging industry is undergoing rapid transformation.

According to industry estimates, India’s green packaging market was valued at over US$11 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow significantly over the next decade as businesses move away from conventional plastic-based solutions. Government regulations, rising consumer awareness, and sustainability commitments from brands are accelerating the shift towards eco-friendly alternatives.

Yet many products marketed as sustainable still contain plastic layers that complicate recycling and increase environmental impact.

The Pune-based founders saw an opportunity to address this gap through innovation.

Building a Plastic-Free Alternative

Rather than relying on traditional packaging materials, the team focused on developing alternatives using:

🌱 Plant-based coatings

🌊 Seaweed-based inks

♻️ Eco-friendly adhesives

📦 Sustainable fibre-based packaging materials

The goal was not simply to replace plastic but to redesign packaging from the ground up using materials that could support circular economy principles.

The journey was far from easy.

The founders faced technical challenges, scepticism from customers, limited funding, and the difficulty of convincing businesses to adopt unfamiliar sustainable alternatives.

From Startup Experiment to Growing Business

Despite these challenges, the company gradually expanded its product portfolio and customer base.

Today, its packaging solutions serve multiple industries including:

• Food delivery

• E-commerce

• Personal care

• Skincare

• Wellness brands

The company’s growth mirrors the increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions across India as brands seek to reduce their environmental footprint.

Revenue Growth

📈 FY24: Approximately ₹25 lakh

📈 FY25: ₹50–60 lakh

📈 FY26: More than ₹2 crore

The growth demonstrates how sustainability-focused businesses are beginning to find commercial success as environmental responsibility becomes a business priority rather than just a compliance requirement.

Riding India’s Sustainability Wave

The startup’s success story comes at a time when India’s packaging industry is experiencing unprecedented change.

Driven by plastic reduction initiatives, e-commerce growth, food delivery expansion, and corporate sustainability commitments, demand for environmentally responsible packaging continues to rise. India’s paper packaging market alone is expected to see substantial growth over the coming years.

As brands search for alternatives that are both functional and environmentally responsible, startups focused on sustainable materials are finding new opportunities to scale.

A Bigger Lesson for Indian Entrepreneurs

Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of this story is that it did not begin with a massive investment or a sophisticated manufacturing facility.

It started with a question:

“Can we create a better way?”

From a small lab in Pune to a growing green packaging business, the journey reflects a broader shift taking place across India’s startup ecosystem—one where innovation, sustainability, and profitability increasingly go hand in hand.

As India builds a greener economy, entrepreneurs like these are proving that solving environmental challenges can also create significant business opportunities.

And in the process, they are helping redefine what growth looks like in the age of sustainability.
