Spray Engineering Devices Limited (SEDL) has received approval for financial assistance of ₹150 crore under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas’ Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana, through the Centre for High Technology (CHT). The funding will support the development of a 91 kilo litres per day (KLPD) hybrid second-generation (2G) ethanol biorefinery at Wave Sugar in Dhanaura, Uttar Pradesh.

  • About Spray Engineering Devices Limited

The project marks a significant step in India’s efforts to accelerate biofuel production, reduce agricultural waste burning, and strengthen energy security through the use of sustainable feedstocks.

Converting Agricultural Residues into Renewable Fuel

The upcoming biorefinery will utilize agricultural residues and crop waste as raw materials for ethanol production, creating value from biomass that is often burned or discarded.

The facility will employ a hybrid technology model combining:

  • Biomass gasification
  • Gas fermentation

Under the proposed process, agricultural residues will first be converted into synthesis gas (syngas) through biomass gasification. The syngas will then be processed using advanced gas fermentation technology to produce ethanol.

This innovative approach is expected to improve feedstock utilization while supporting India’s transition toward low-carbon transportation fuels.

Technology Partners Supporting the Project

The ethanol biorefinery will be developed with technology support from:

  • LanzaTech
  • Ankur Scientific Energy Technologies Private Limited

LanzaTech is globally recognized for its carbon recycling and gas fermentation technologies, while Ankur Scientific specializes in biomass gasification solutions.

The combination of these technologies is expected to enable efficient conversion of agricultural waste into renewable ethanol, contributing to India’s growing bioeconomy.

Supporting India’s Ethanol Blending and Energy Goals

The project aligns with the Government of India’s broader strategy to increase domestic ethanol production and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Second-generation ethanol plants play a critical role in this strategy because they utilize agricultural residues and non-food biomass, avoiding competition with food crops while providing additional income opportunities for farmers.

Key benefits of 2G ethanol projects include:

🌱 Reduction in stubble burning and agricultural waste

🌱 Lower greenhouse gas emissions

🌱 Increased renewable fuel production

🌱 Enhanced rural economic development

🌱 Improved energy security

India has been actively promoting ethanol blending in transportation fuels as part of its clean energy and decarbonization objectives.

What is the PM JI-VAN Yojana?

The Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN (Jaiv Indhan-Vatavaran Anukool Fasal Awashesh Nivaran) Yojana was launched to encourage the establishment of advanced biofuel projects using lignocellulosic biomass and agricultural residues.

The scheme provides financial support for commercial-scale second-generation ethanol projects aimed at:

  • Reducing crop residue burning
  • Promoting waste-to-wealth initiatives
  • Encouraging advanced biofuel technologies
  • Supporting India’s climate and energy commitments

The initiative has become a key pillar in India’s efforts to develop a sustainable biofuel ecosystem.

Strengthening India’s Circular Bioeconomy

The new Uttar Pradesh biorefinery is expected to contribute to the development of a circular bioeconomy by converting agricultural waste into valuable renewable fuel.

With increasing focus on decarbonization, energy transition, and sustainable resource utilization, advanced biofuel projects are emerging as an important component of India’s clean energy roadmap.

By leveraging innovative technologies and government support, Spray Engineering Devices aims to create a commercially viable model for converting agricultural residues into low-carbon fuels while supporting environmental sustainability and rural development.
