Tata Power Company Limited has secured a significant power transmission project in Karnataka after receiving a Letter of Intent (LOI) from REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited (RECPDCL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of REC Limited.
The project involves the acquisition of Ryapte Power Transmission Limited, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) established to develop a strategic transmission network aimed at strengthening Karnataka’s power infrastructure and supporting rising electricity demand.
The project will be executed under the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model and is expected to become a key addition to Tata Power’s expanding transmission portfolio.
Strengthening Karnataka’s Power Transmission Network
As India’s energy demand continues to rise, robust transmission infrastructure is becoming increasingly critical for ensuring reliable power supply and integrating new generation capacity into the grid.
The Karnataka transmission project is designed to enhance power evacuation capabilities, improve grid reliability, and facilitate efficient electricity transfer across key regions of the state.
According to Tata Power, the project carries an annual transmission charge of ₹521.07 crore, highlighting its long-term strategic and financial significance.
Extensive Transmission Infrastructure Planned
Under the project, Tata Power will develop approximately 250 kilometres of transmission infrastructure across Karnataka.
The scope of work includes:
- Construction of a 400 kV double-circuit transmission line
- Development of a 220 kV double-circuit transmission line
- Installation of a 220 kV underground cable network
The new transmission assets are expected to strengthen connectivity between major substations and improve overall network resilience.
Two High-Capacity Substations to Be Developed
A key component of the project involves the development of two new substations designed to support growing power demand and transmission requirements.
Ryapte Air Insulated Substation (AIS)
The first facility will be a 400/220 kV Air Insulated Substation (AIS) located at Ryapte in Tumkur district.
Key specifications include:
- Capacity of 5 x 500 MVA
- Two 125 MVAr, 400 kV bus reactors
Doddathaggalli Gas Insulated Substation (GIS)
The second facility will be a 400/220 kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) near Hosakote at Doddathaggalli.
The substation will feature:
- Capacity of 3 x 500 MVA
- Two 125 MVAr, 400 kV bus reactors
These facilities are expected to enhance power transmission efficiency while supporting future demand growth in the region.
Improving Regional Connectivity
The transmission network will create critical links between existing and newly developed substations.
The project will connect:
- Ryapte Substation to Doddathaggalli GIS
- Existing Kolar Substation to Doddathaggalli
- Doddathaggalli with Ekarajapura Substation
- Doddathaggalli with Hosakote Substation
- Doddathaggalli with Sarjapura Substation
The integrated network is expected to improve electricity flow across Karnataka while reducing congestion and strengthening grid reliability.
Long-Term Transmission Operations
Tata Power stated that the project has a Scheduled Commercial Operation Date (SCOD) of 30 months from the effective date of SPV transfer.
Upon completion, the company will operate and maintain the transmission assets for a period of 35 years, ensuring long-term service delivery and stable revenue generation.
Supporting India’s Energy Infrastructure Growth
India is witnessing significant investments in transmission infrastructure as renewable energy capacity, industrial demand, and urban power consumption continue to grow.
Transmission projects such as this play a vital role in:
- Strengthening grid stability
- Supporting renewable energy integration
- Improving electricity access
- Enhancing power evacuation capabilities
- Enabling long-term energy security
The Karnataka project aligns with the country’s broader efforts to modernize and expand its power transmission network to meet future demand requirements.
Tata Power Expands Transmission Portfolio
The latest project further strengthens Tata Power’s position in India’s power transmission sector.
The company clarified that the contract was awarded by a domestic entity and does not involve any promoter group or related-party transactions.
As India continues to invest heavily in power infrastructure and energy transition initiatives, Tata Power’s growing transmission business is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting the nation’s electricity network and economic development.
The project represents another milestone in the company’s strategy to build critical infrastructure assets while contributing to India’s evolving energy landscape.
