The agreement further strengthens the long-standing clean energy partnership between the two companies and supports Microsoft’s ambitious sustainability goals while expanding renewable energy infrastructure in the United States.
Avangrid and Microsoft Expand Renewable Energy Partnership
The newly signed agreement marks the fourth renewable energy project contracted between Avangrid and Microsoft in the U.S.
The companies already have agreements covering renewable energy projects in Ohio and California, both of which became operational in 2025. In addition, a wind energy project in Washington State is expected to begin commercial operations later this year.
With the addition of the new solar project, Avangrid and Microsoft now have more than 500 MW of renewable energy capacity under contract across the United States.
The partnership reflects the growing demand from technology companies for clean energy solutions to power data centers, cloud computing infrastructure, and AI-driven operations.
Bluebird Solar Project to Support Clean Energy Growth
The new facility, known as Bluebird Solar, will be developed in Klickitat County, Washington, and is expected to begin commercial operations in 2028.
According to Avangrid, the project represents an investment of approximately $300 million and is anticipated to create around 300 construction jobs, delivering economic benefits to the local community while supporting Washington State’s renewable energy objectives.
Once operational, the project will contribute additional solar generation capacity to the regional power grid and help meet increasing electricity demand from large-scale technology and digital infrastructure operations.
Microsoft Advances Its Renewable Energy Commitments
The agreement aligns with Microsoft’s broader sustainability and clean energy strategy.
The technology giant recently announced that it has achieved its goal of matching 100% of its annual global electricity consumption with renewable energy purchases.
Microsoft has also established its ambitious “100/100/0” vision, which aims to ensure that by 2030:
- 100% of its electricity consumption
- 100% of the time
- Is matched by electricity purchases from zero-carbon energy sources
The initiative is part of Microsoft’s wider environmental strategy focused on reducing carbon emissions, supporting renewable energy development, and advancing global sustainability efforts.
Rising Energy Demand from Technology and AI Infrastructure
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital services has significantly increased electricity demand across the technology sector.
As hyperscale data centers continue to expand globally, major technology companies are increasingly entering long-term renewable energy agreements to secure reliable power supplies while meeting climate commitments.
Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) have become a key mechanism for supporting new renewable energy development by providing project developers with long-term revenue certainty while enabling corporate buyers to access clean electricity.
Avangrid Strengthens Position in Renewable Energy Development
Commenting on the agreement, Jose Antonio Miranda, Chief Executive Officer of Avangrid, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting customers’ growing energy needs through renewable energy investments.
He noted that the partnership with Microsoft reflects Avangrid’s track record of developing large-scale clean energy projects for some of the world’s leading technology companies.
The company continues to expand its portfolio of solar, wind, and energy infrastructure projects across the United States as demand for sustainable energy solutions accelerates.
Renewable Energy Partnerships Driving Energy Transition
The latest agreement highlights the increasing role of corporate renewable energy procurement in accelerating the global energy transition.
As businesses pursue net-zero targets and governments encourage clean energy investments, partnerships between renewable energy developers and major corporate energy buyers are becoming a critical driver of new solar and wind energy projects.
With more than 500 MW of contracted capacity now under agreement, the Avangrid-Microsoft partnership demonstrates how collaboration between the energy and technology sectors can support economic growth, job creation, and long-term sustainability goals.
The Bluebird Solar project is expected to contribute to both companies’ clean energy objectives while reinforcing the growing importance of renewable power in meeting future electricity demand.
