In his new role, Seidler will be responsible for overseeing the implementation and continuous development of UBS’s Sustainability and Climate Risk (SCR) framework, ensuring that environmental, social, and climate-related risks are effectively integrated across the organization’s risk management processes.

Experienced Sustainability Risk Leader Takes Key Role

Alexander Seidler brings nearly two decades of experience in sustainability and climate risk management within the global banking sector.

He first joined UBS in 2006 and held a range of environmental and social risk-related roles across key financial hubs including Zurich, London, and Singapore. During his tenure, he contributed to the development of sustainability-focused risk frameworks and governance structures within the bank.

In 2022, Seidler moved to Credit Suisse, where he served as Head of Sustainability Risk. Following UBS’s acquisition of Credit Suisse in 2023, he returned to UBS and most recently held the position of Head of Sustainability and Climate Risk Assessments.

His appointment comes at a time when global financial institutions are facing increasing regulatory scrutiny around climate-related financial risks, sustainability disclosures, and ESG governance practices.

Key Responsibilities in New Position

As Head of Sustainability and Climate Risk, Seidler will play a critical role in strengthening UBS’s approach to managing sustainability-related risks and opportunities.

According to his professional profile, his responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining UBS’s sustainability and climate risk appetite framework and standards
  • Establishing internal sustainability reporting and disclosure processes
  • Integrating sustainability and climate risk considerations into traditional risk management frameworks
  • Monitoring and implementing regulatory and supervisory requirements
  • Acting as UBS’s Sustainability and Climate Risk Underwriter
  • Overseeing sustainability risk assessments and escalation processes involving products, transactions, clients, and supplier onboarding

These responsibilities are expected to support UBS’s broader sustainability strategy while ensuring compliance with evolving global regulatory expectations.

Sustainability and Climate Risk Become Strategic Priorities

Banks and financial institutions worldwide are increasingly incorporating climate and sustainability risks into enterprise risk management frameworks as stakeholders demand greater transparency and accountability.

The growing focus on sustainable finance, climate disclosures, net-zero commitments, and ESG reporting has elevated sustainability risk management from a compliance function to a strategic business priority.

UBS has been actively expanding its sustainability initiatives and integrating climate-related considerations into investment decisions, lending activities, and corporate governance practices.

Seidler Reflects on His Professional Journey

In a LinkedIn post announcing his appointment, Seidler reflected on the professional journey that ultimately brought him back to UBS.

He stated:

“The past few years have been quite a journey — returning from Singapore, taking on a new challenge at Credit Suisse, and ultimately finding myself back at UBS less than a year later. What followed was an intense and inspiring integration process, bringing together two exceptional teams and shaping a new chapter for the SCR program in UBS.”

His comments highlight the extensive integration efforts that followed UBS’s acquisition of Credit Suisse and the ongoing work to build a unified sustainability and climate risk framework across the combined organization.

Strengthening UBS’s ESG and Risk Management Strategy

The appointment underscores UBS’s commitment to embedding sustainability and climate considerations into its core business and risk management operations.

As climate-related risks become increasingly material for financial institutions, effective governance and oversight will play a crucial role in helping banks navigate regulatory changes, investor expectations, and emerging sustainability challenges.

With Alexander Seidler taking on the leadership role, UBS is expected to further enhance its sustainability and climate risk capabilities while supporting the bank’s long-term ESG objectives and responsible finance strategy.
