New Delhi: Canada-based clean technology company Enervoxa is planning to establish a processing facility in India to extract rare earth elements (REEs) from red mud, an industrial byproduct generated during aluminium production. The proposed project aims to support India’s growing focus on critical mineral security while promoting sustainable resource recovery from industrial waste.
As part of its expansion strategy, Enervoxa intends to engage with leading aluminium producers, including Vedanta, Hindalco Industries, and National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), to explore potential partnerships for sourcing raw materials and developing the processing ecosystem.
Facility to Recover Rare Earth Elements from Red Mud
The proposed facility will use Enervoxa’s proprietary extraction technology, developed over the past eight years, to recover valuable rare earth elements from red mud.
The company is evaluating multiple processing models, including establishing a fully integrated extraction and refining facility in India or producing a concentrated rare earth material that can undergo additional refining at a downstream processing plant.
Red mud has long been considered a waste product of the alumina refining process. However, advancements in extraction technologies are enabling industries to recover strategic minerals that are essential for clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, electronics, and defence applications.
Focus on Critical Minerals and Circular Economy
Beyond rare earth elements, the proposed facility is expected to recover several commercially valuable materials, including:
- Iron oxide
- Titanium-bearing materials
- Industrial pigments
- Water treatment coagulants
Recovering these materials from industrial waste supports the principles of the circular economy, reducing waste while creating additional value from existing industrial resources.
The initiative also has the potential to strengthen India’s domestic supply chain for critical minerals, reducing dependence on imports and improving resource efficiency.
India Emerging as a Critical Minerals Hub
Enervoxa said it is currently evaluating commercial opportunities in India and other alumina-producing regions globally.
India has been actively working to strengthen its critical minerals ecosystem as demand for rare earth elements continues to grow across renewable energy, electric mobility, battery manufacturing, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing sectors.
The proposed investment reflects increasing global interest in India’s mineral processing capabilities and its expanding role in the global clean technology supply chain.
Aligned with India’s Critical Minerals Strategy
The project aligns with India’s broader efforts to develop indigenous capabilities for extracting rare earth elements from industrial waste.
Research on rare earth recovery from red mud is already being undertaken by the Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development and Design Centre (JNARDDC) in collaboration with various government agencies and industry stakeholders under the coordination of NITI Aayog.
The initiative forms part of India’s long-term strategy to secure access to critical minerals that are essential for achieving energy transition goals and supporting advanced manufacturing.

Rare earth elements play a crucial role in manufacturing permanent magnets, electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, consumer electronics, aerospace systems, and defence technologies.
