New Delhi: Oman has taken another major step toward expanding its renewable energy capacity, with the country’s state-owned Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP) launching a tender for two large-scale solar power projects with a combined generation capacity of 1.5 GW. The projects, valued at more than $1 billion, are expected to strengthen Oman’s clean energy infrastructure while supporting its long-term energy diversification strategy.

  • Outlook

The tender covers the Adam Solar Independent Power Project (IPP) and the Sinaw Solar Independent Power Project (IPP), both of which will be developed under the independent power producer model.

Two Large-Scale Solar Projects Announced

Under the latest tender, PWP plans to develop:

  • Adam Solar IPP – 1 GW solar project with an integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
  • Sinaw Solar IPP – 500 MW utility-scale solar project

Together, the two projects will add 1.5 GW of renewable energy capacity to Oman’s growing solar portfolio.

Adam Solar Project to Include Battery Energy Storage

The larger of the two developments, the Adam Solar IPP, will feature both solar generation and battery energy storage infrastructure to improve grid reliability and support the integration of renewable energy into the national electricity network.

According to project details released by PWP:

  • Capacity: 1 GW
  • Estimated investment: US$746 million
  • Land area: More than 20 million square metres
  • Includes Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

The addition of energy storage is expected to improve power availability during periods of lower solar generation while enhancing grid flexibility.

Sinaw Solar Project Valued at Nearly $300 Million

The second project, the Sinaw Solar IPP, will contribute an additional 500 MW of solar generation capacity.

Project highlights include:

  • Capacity: 500 MW
  • Estimated investment: US$288 million
  • Land area: More than 5 million square metres

The project forms part of Oman’s broader strategy to increase renewable electricity generation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Qualification Process Begins

PWP has initiated the procurement process by issuing a Request for Qualification (RFQ) for interested developers.

Key deadlines include:

  • July 7, 2026 – Deadline to purchase tender documents
  • July 27, 2026 – Deadline for submission of Statements of Qualification

Tender documents are available for a non-refundable fee of OMR 350 (approximately US$910).

The qualification stage will identify developers eligible to participate in the next phase of the competitive bidding process.

Part of Broader Renewable Energy Expansion

The latest solar tender follows several other clean energy initiatives recently launched by PWP.

These include:

  • A consultancy tender supporting a 300 MW solar project
  • A consultancy tender for a green hydrogen project

The projects reflect Oman’s broader efforts to diversify its energy mix while expanding renewable power generation and emerging clean energy industries.

Oman Continues Expanding Solar Capacity

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Oman had installed 1,672 MW of cumulative solar capacity by the end of 2025.

The addition of the Adam and Sinaw projects would significantly increase the country’s renewable energy portfolio and support national targets for cleaner electricity generation.

Growing investments in utility-scale solar, battery storage and green hydrogen position Oman as one of the Middle East’s emerging renewable energy markets.

Battery Storage Strengthens Grid Reliability

The inclusion of battery energy storage in the Adam Solar project reflects a growing global trend of pairing renewable energy with storage technologies.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) help:

  • Balance electricity supply and demand
  • Improve renewable energy integration
  • Enhance grid stability
  • Reduce reliance on conventional backup generation
  • Support reliable power delivery during peak demand

As renewable penetration increases worldwide, battery storage is becoming a key component of modern energy infrastructure.

Outlook

Oman’s latest 1.5 GW solar tender marks another important milestone in the country’s transition toward cleaner and more diversified energy sources.

With more than US$1 billion in planned investment, utility-scale solar generation, battery energy storage and complementary green hydrogen initiatives, Oman continues to strengthen its position as a regional renewable energy hub.

The successful development of the Adam and Sinaw Solar IPPs is expected to boost renewable electricity generation, attract international investment and contribute to the country’s long-term sustainability and energy security objectives.
