Despite processing the payment, the company clarified that the amount was deposited under protest and that it is taking legal and regulatory steps to challenge the order.

Haryana Pollution Board Issues Notice

According to the company, the order was formally received on May 21, 2026. The action pertains to the operation of a Jubilant FoodWorks outlet located in Ballabgarh, Faridabad during June 2022.

The Haryana State Pollution Control Board cited the absence of a mandatory “Consent to Operate” approval under applicable Water and Air Pollution Control regulations as the basis for imposing the environmental compensation.

Regulatory approvals such as “Consent to Operate” are typically required for businesses operating under environmental compliance frameworks established by state pollution control authorities.

Company Deposits ₹22.65 Lakh Under Protest

The pollution control authority directed the company to deposit ₹22,65,000 as environmental compensation.

Jubilant FoodWorks confirmed that the payment has already been made in accordance with the prescribed procedures. However, the company emphasized that the payment was processed under protest while it continues to contest the validity of the order.

The company stated that it does not expect the issue to have any material impact on:

  • Financial performance
  • Day-to-day business operations
  • Store network expansion
  • Overall operational activities

Regulatory Compliance Under Growing Scrutiny

The development comes amid increasing regulatory focus on environmental compliance across commercial establishments, retail chains, and food service operators in India.

State pollution control boards have been intensifying enforcement around:

  • Operational approvals
  • Waste management compliance
  • Air and water pollution permissions
  • Environmental documentation

Companies operating large retail and food service networks are increasingly required to maintain strict compliance frameworks across multiple states and jurisdictions.

Jubilant FoodWorks Continues Expansion

Jubilant FoodWorks remains one of India’s largest food service operators, managing popular quick-service restaurant brands across the country.

The company has continued expanding its retail footprint while investing in:

  • Digital ordering platforms
  • Delivery infrastructure
  • Store expansion
  • Supply chain modernization

Industry analysts believe regulatory and environmental compliance will continue becoming a more important aspect of operational risk management for large consumer-facing businesses.

Conclusion

While Jubilant FoodWorks has complied with the immediate payment requirement, the company’s decision to challenge the order indicates the matter may continue through regulatory or legal channels.

The case also highlights the growing importance of environmental approvals and compliance procedures for businesses operating across India’s expanding retail and food service ecosystem.
