The agreement represents a significant milestone for Germany’s renewable energy sector and is expected to accelerate the development of one of the country’s most important offshore wind projects. According to the companies, the commitment provides the commercial certainty needed to advance construction of the Gennaker project, which will generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of more than one million German households annually.

Gennaker Set to Become Germany’s Largest Baltic Sea Wind Farm

Germany-based Skyborn Renewables is a leading offshore wind infrastructure platform focused on the development, construction, and operation of offshore wind projects globally.

The company was established in 2022 by infrastructure investor Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), now owned by BlackRock, following GIP’s acquisition of offshore wind developer wpd offshore.

Located approximately 15 kilometers north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Gennaker offshore wind farm will become the largest offshore wind project in the German Baltic Sea.

The development will feature:

  • 63 offshore wind turbines
  • 15 MW capacity per turbine
  • Total installed capacity of 976.5 MW

Once operational, the project will add nearly one gigawatt of new renewable energy capacity to Germany’s electricity grid, strengthening the country’s clean energy infrastructure and supporting its energy transition goals.

Supporting Germany’s Renewable Energy Ambitions

The Gennaker project is expected to play an important role in helping Germany achieve its target of 30 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030.

In addition to increasing renewable energy generation, the wind farm is expected to enhance energy security by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing domestic clean power production from the Baltic Sea.

Construction is expected to begin following financial close in the summer of 2026, with commercial operations scheduled to commence by the end of 2028.

Offshore Wind and Infrastructure Development

Commenting on the project, Adam Thomsen, Chief Development Officer of Skyborn Renewables, said:

“As our blueprint project, Gennaker demonstrates how large-scale offshore wind can be delivered in a reliable, scalable way. It also reflects the growing need to connect renewable electricity generation with robust and forward-looking infrastructure that enables a resilient energy system.”

The statement highlights the increasing importance of integrating renewable energy generation with modern grid infrastructure capable of supporting long-term energy system resilience.

Amazon Expands Renewable Energy Portfolio in Germany

Amazon continues to strengthen its position as one of the world’s largest corporate buyers of renewable energy.

According to BloombergNEF, Amazon ranked among the largest corporate clean energy purchasers globally in 2025, contracting 10.22 GW of renewable energy capacity during the year.

The company has invested in more than 700 renewable energy projects worldwide, representing over 40 GW of carbon-free energy capacity.

The Gennaker agreement further expands Amazon’s renewable energy footprint in Germany.

With this addition, Amazon’s German clean energy portfolio now consists of 12 renewable energy projects with a combined capacity exceeding 1.3 GW.

Once all projects become operational, they are expected to generate enough carbon-free electricity to power the equivalent of more than 1.8 million German homes annually.

Strengthening Energy Security and Economic Growth

Amazon believes the agreement will contribute not only to renewable energy expansion but also to regional economic development and energy security.

Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager for Amazon Germany, Austria and Switzerland, said:

“By signing our largest power purchase agreement in Germany, we’re giving Skyborn the certainty to move forward with Gennaker, bringing nearly one gigawatt of new offshore wind capacity onto the grid, strengthening Germany’s energy security, and supporting jobs and investment in the region.”

The project is expected to generate economic benefits through infrastructure investment, job creation, and supply chain development while contributing to Germany’s long-term decarbonization objectives.

Growing Momentum for Corporate Renewable Energy Procurement

The agreement reflects the growing role of corporate power purchase agreements in financing large-scale renewable energy projects worldwide.

As companies pursue net-zero commitments and sustainability targets, long-term renewable energy contracts are becoming a critical mechanism for enabling clean energy deployment while providing stable electricity pricing and supply certainty.

The Skyborn-Amazon partnership demonstrates how collaboration between renewable energy developers and major corporate energy buyers can accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon economy while supporting national energy security and climate goals.

With construction expected to begin in 2026, the Gennaker offshore wind farm is set to become a landmark project in Germany’s renewable energy landscape and a major contributor to the country’s clean energy future.
